How Thuringia accelerates innovative startups

The TRIP Accelerator Program for innovative start-ups from Thuringia enters its 5th round with 10 projects.

The Thuringian Regional Innovation Program, TRIP for short, of the Foundation for Technology, Innovation and Research Thuringia (STIFT) entered its fifth round today with 10 innovative start-ups. In the six-month TRIP class, the business models of the young projects are further developed together with experts, they gain access to a broad network of investors, companies and innovators and thus have the opportunity to test prototypes and models. The goal is investment readiness, the further development of the startups so that they become interesting for investors.

State Secretary Dr. Katja Böhler (Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Science and Digital Society), STIFT Board Member Christiane Kilian and numerous guests from the startup community and investors came together for the “Start Your TRIP” kick-off event at Kontor in Erfurt to get to know the applicants of the new TRIP class. The start-ups presented their innovative start-up concepts in a pitch. Innovative companies and projects from various sectors have applied for the TRIP program, which has been successfully developing Thuringian startups since 2019. These included start-ups with a focus on IT, medtech, life science, optics, human resources and green tech.

“The TRIP program shows once again what an enormous range of creative start-up ideas there are in Thuringia. I am excited to see how the young companies develop and look forward to many new innovations from Thuringia,” said State Secretary Böhler in Erfurt. Since its launch in 2019, TRIP has become an integral part of the broad-based start-up support in the Free State. “The TRIP program supports start-ups in raising the necessary start-up capital and ultimately turning new ideas into viable business models.”

Christiane Kilian, Chairwoman of STIFT, presented a total of 10 start-ups with the ticket for the TRIP Class 2023/24. “With the content of the TRIP Class and the network of the TRIP Community, all budding entrepreneurs are given the opportunity to develop their innovative business models towards investment readiness. An exciting and challenging time full of inspiration, impulses and further development is now beginning for the selected start-ups.”

The selected teams will embark on a six-month journey full of individual coaching, valuable networking events and a budget of €4,000 for selected projects. At the heart of the program are the monthly workshops, in which participants receive valuable input from industry-specific experts.

Projects with particularly scalable growth opportunities also have the chance to gain a place in the subsequent Final TRIP Class, which focuses on financing from investors. The highlight of the Final TRIP Class is an appearance on stage at the Investor Days Thuringia, which STIFT is organizing with bm-t Beteiligungsmanagement Thüringen GmbH (bm|t) in Erfurt on June 5 and 6, 2024, to connect startups and companies with investors.

About TRIP

The Thuringian Regional Innovation Program TRIP was initiated in 2019 by the Foundation for Technology, Innovation and Research Thuringia (STIFT) as part of the ThEx innovativ project to strengthen Thuringia’s start-up community, accelerate innovation, and connect stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem. Since then, the accelerator program has already advanced 47 start-up teams from diverse fields such as IoT, AI solutions, mobility, new materials, green tech and space tech and successfully networked them with the VC community.

The TRIP program has a large community of innovators, investors and established companies and is supported by strong partners such as EY, Mehnert GmbH, LEG and Beteiligungsmanagement Thüringen GmbH as a sponsoring partner. TRIP is funded by the Thuringian Ministry of Economic Affairs as part of the ThEx innovativ project with money from the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) and state funds.
